about

Today, Lewis Coleman (he/him) announces his new album, Offline, out November 3rd on new Naarm/Melbourne label Beloved Recordings, and presents its lead single/video, “Talking To Yourself”. Hailed as a “bold new voice” (Clash Magazine) for his 2020 debut Method Of Places, Coleman's music is a blend of the abstract and melodic, combining elements that shift and morph around the listener with a hushed intensity, while always remaining grounded by a strong rhythm section. With Offline, however, Coleman has confidently deconstructed and reshaped the style for which he’s been known, elevating his songwriting with a foolhardiness and accepting a more confident and raw side of himself. It’s music replete with playful arrangements and kinetic opportunity and, as Coleman states, “songs that are hot, warm, saturated and fun”.

With lanky, dawdling guitar lines that almost talk and trip over each other, “Talking To Yourself” is a comment on the ever increasing individuality within our modern society. “I can’t really relate to you cos’ I’m so caught up selling my own life”, Coleman sings, an observation into our veiled short-sightedness that moves in parallel with the people around us, while never quite touching. Of the track, Coleman says “Increasingly these days with how interactions and sharing works in the world, it feels like lots of us are back to engaging in parallel play; where we move with each other without interacting directly, we are influenced by our surroundings, sharing our lives, into a hall of mirrors.”

lyrics

which one do you want? do you see it on the wall here?
a stitch up, slip of tongue
can’t save anyone from all this.
It’s your pantomime, you can pick your props
I can’t really relate to you cos’ I’m so caught up selling my own life

we’re talking to ourselves
we’re talking to ourselves i don’t wanna know anymore
we’re talking to ourselves…..

watching everyone’s signpost figures getting blown out
no more hearts beating in full
I got the message from a woman who makes her own doubt
given that you work a lot, you’re a workaholic or it’s numbed fear

but come on…

we’re talking to ourselves i don’t wanna know anymore
we’re talking to ourselves
we’re talking to ourselves

we’re talking to ourselves ahh…

switch it off
